LEEMAN – ANZAC DAY LONG WEEKEND 2016 – PART 3

24/6/2016 – Fishing at Sunset

We decided to have another go at fishing, south of Leeman, near the end of the day.

Seclusion

Another beautiful beach, Marcel and I decide to go for a walk before it gets too dark, we will go that way.

Cave

Past some rocks that have been worn down by the waves, there is a small cave happening but it has been filled up by sand.

stomach

A spot of peaceful fishing, Sid yells at Marcel “Get out of the way, she is trying to take MY photo”.

That'sBetter

Yeah, better result, Maria and Syd relaxing and watching the sun go down.

sunset

No better way to end the day (although a few fish would have been nice, we did go home empty handed).

LEEMAN – ANZAC DAY LONG WEEKEND 2016 – PART 2

23/4/2016 – Motor biking on the salt flats

LookingCool

First lesson, salt flats may look dry on the surface, but below they can be somewhat less than dry.

mud

Someone is going to be washing down their bike tonight.

TooHigh

Now, I have ridden a number of trail bikes and this one looks extremely high.

BitHigh

And yes, I am right, it is very high. Now that is alright while you are riding and moving along, but not so good when you have to stop or get off.  Very difficult to feel in control.

LEEMAN – ANZAC DAY LONG WEEKEND 2016 – PART 1

22/4/2016 – Net Fishing

I am in Leeman for the Anzac Day long weekend for the second year running!!!!  Marcel, Sid and Roger all have their birthday on 25/4/2016 and often celebrate together at Sid’s shack in Leeman.

Sandunes

Here we are following Sid to the top of the sand dune.  I am really keen to have another go at net fishing.  If you want to see what happened last year, click here.

Beach

Now at the top of the dunes which look over the beach where we are going fishing.

Supervisor

Hmm, could be the same story as last year, the supervisor is still in business – checking out the work force.  Maria has joined us this year, she is also watching keenly.

PaddlingOut

Off goes Roger, taking the net out and around to trap the fish.

Yum

Result – fresh mullet!!!

ANZAC DAY LONG WEEKEND – FISHING

25/4/2015 – Net Fishing 30kms north of Leeman

Nets

One of our small group has a net fishing licence, so we get set to go out and try our luck.  But first we have to modify the nets and add extra weights to the bottom of the net so that it will hang down to the sand and trap the fish.  I am happy to learn a new skill, but someone thinks he is the supervisor!!!!!

Nets2

Here I am adding weights to the bottom of the net.

Supervisor

And yet another shot of the supervisor, making sure everyone is doing the right thing!!!!

Canoe1

Two of the guys are preparing the kayak, ready to take the net out in the cold water and let it out slowly along the way.

Beach

Finally ready, we set off up the coast.  Sid led us to a beautiful, secluded beach. Wow! Soft sand, blue, calm water and the place to ourselves.  All we need now is fish.

Spotter

We hop up on the sand dunes to see if any fish can be seen.  What a great spot.

SetNet

Much fussing around with the kayak and net, stick in the sand to hold the start of the net and then we send Roger out in the kayak with the net to feed it out.

IMG_6321

There he goes, doing a great job.

Mullet

Here’s the first mullet that we caught. Only two in the first sweep, we did not have our act together (much shouting, cursing and blaming)(in our defense the water was very cold, and I didn’t want to get my shorts wet!) and most of them got away. Better luck next time.

Ray

Ahh! Next time we get a sting ray in our net and have to back off and let him do what he wants.  He finally jumps over the net having scared most of the fish back out again.

Supervisor2

But look – the Supervisor is doing some work and has picked up a fish!!!   We caught about a dozen in this sweep and called it a day, it is harder work than it looks. PerfectPlace

View looking the other way just to show how beautiful this place is.

Fillets

And here’s the boys gallantly scaling and preparing the fish for cooking.  I also must say that the guys did all of the cooking and preparing and the food was wonderful.  Thanks a lot guys, I had a great weekend.
