Tasmania

Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania

Our last afternoon in Tasmania was spent at Sandy Bay, Hobart.  We were really just looking for some waterfront to have a look at all of the yachts that we could see from afar.  Getting to the water was not easy, with difficult parking and small roads and cul-de-sacs. We ended up at Sandy Bay and this is what we saw!

That was quite a buzz.  Again, we had great weather, clear skies and beautiful photography possible.  Lots of boats.

Redlands Estate on the banks of the Plenty River

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Redlands Estate, established in 1819.  “What was once the most productive farm in Tasmania is now home to one of two ‘paddock to bottle’ single malt whisky distilleries in the world.”   We really enjoyed our visit to Redlands.  We explored the historic gardens, ponds, canals, old bakehouse, stables (home of two Hobart Cup winners) and outbuildings.  This is a place we would be happy to return to again and again, friendly proprietors and lovely ambience.

Platypus Point

Platypus Point

We looked in vain for platypus, but what a beautiful setting.  Apparently there are many platypus’ at Redlands, they were hiding the day that we visited, but the grounds were so lovely, green and damp that just searching for them was enjoyable.

We watched a man being winched all the way down to the bottom of the dam, and then noticed that there were some others already on the ground at the bottom, we couldn’t work out what they were doing.  An impressive piece of engineering, but nothing will ever bring back all of the trees and animals that lost their lives for the sake of this monstrosity!  Now they have even done feasibility studies into draining the dam and working out how long it will take for the land to return to its original condition – as if that would ever be possible.

Camping at Ted’s Beach

We camped for one night at Ted’s Beach on our way to Gordon Dam.  Nestled on the shore of Lake Pedder, a beautiful spot specifically designed to become a beach when Lake Pedder was dammed.

The next morning the lake was calm and beautiful.
