20/07/2015 – Bits and Pieces

TomEating

Tom attempting to eat noodles at Fremantle Markets.

Brewery

Beer tasting at IronBark Brewery with Phillip.  This is me wondering if I really have to join in and drink some beer, or will Phillip be happy to polish it all off himself.  Yes – he was quite happy to have 99% of it.

Stretch

Strange looking car he wanted me to photograph at the Brewery.

EMMA1

Here is Emma doing a good job of totally ruining my carefully posed family photo.

Yes, we did finally get her to sit down and behave.  From the left, Andrew, Tom, Linda, Phillip, Emma.  A lovely family meal, thanks Steve.

15/07/2015 – Paddle Boarding

On yet another bright, sunny, beautiful afternoon my paddle boarding promise to the boys came into fruition.

TomPumping

Tom and Phillip pumped the paddle board up a lot faster than it takes me to use the car pump.  It was up and full in no time flat.  In this time Marcel found us at Point Walter, he brought his paddle board with him, so the kids could have one each for their first attempt.

TomPip

Phillip chose to sit and use the kayak paddle, a good choice but you always get a wet bum this way.  Tom decided to give standing up a go (standing up is a lot easier on my wide board, which is designed for all round use, so it’s good for beginners).  Marcel’s board is much narrower and longer, designed more for speed.

TomPosing

And look, he is standing up and posing.

Tom Again

Tom and Phillip went off down river for a paddle, when they came back they had switched boards and Tom was very wet.  But he has managed to stand on the long board.

Waterbirds

My attention got sidetracked by the water birds and…

SeaEagle

and sea eagle that was perched on a nearby tree.

Here’s Phillip coming in for a close up.  He’s only wet because Tom decided he should be.

12/07/2015 – We all get to go fishing

I had arranged with Marcel for the boys to go fishing one day during their stay, so along with Andrew (Linda’s son) off we trotted one beautiful sunny morning, onto the river and out into the ocean.

3bums

3 excited lads looking forward to catching some fish.

SadTom

We caught a good lot of squid and herring (tommies) essentially to use as bait.

HappyFishers

Then we had a go at catching “the big ones”.  We cast out, waited, reeled the line in, checked the bait, cast out again, and then…

HappyAndrew

A small shark and a very happy Andrew.  This was the catch of the day.  There were no more ‘big ones’.  However, we were happy to go home with a dozen good sized squid and over a dozen herring.

CleaningSquid

Then, of course, someone had to clean the catch.  Luckily there were plenty of offers and we got stuck in the next morning, with plenty of water, newspaper and knives.

TurningInsideOut

This is how you turn the squid body inside out.

11SquidLater

Much fun was had by all, and we salvaged three good meals out of this lot.  Plus everyone knows how to clean squid now.

11/07/2015 – Let’s Go Cycling- Railway Reserves Heritage Trail

The boys were very keen to go on a cycle ride that I had told them about – The Heritage Railway Cycle Trail.  I had managed to borrow a couple of bikes for them to use while they were in Perth.

PipsPhone

This from Phillip’s phone, a picture of our first stop for the day.  We are viewing the Hovea Falls.

Scenery

Always a beautiful place, whatever the season.

BikePhillipAndTom

I love this photo taken on Tom’s phone.  Just look at Phillip – he looks stuffed already.  The face says it all.

TomPip

Now stand nicely boys and let me take a nice photo!

ShallWePush

Oh, and who is going to push who off the rock?  Settle down boys, we don’t want any broken legs just yet.

TomTunnel

Somehow they managed to get me to go through the tunnel with them.  So far, I had managed to avoid the tunnel, I don’t have good lights – but that didn’t matter as we barreled through without lights.   When I say “we barreled through” I actually mean, they barreled through, I was a long way behind and taking it real easy.  Not a nice experience and one I do not care to repeat.

TomPipBikes2

Here we are on a very nice gravel road, enjoying the sunshine and the road.  We also enjoyed lunch at the Mt Helena Tavern, then decided that this was a good half way spot, so we turned around and returned back to the car.  A great day.

TomPipBikes1

Happy boys. Some good memories to hold on to.
